The primary aim of this college is to give good technical education to the fishermen community and also to extend its service to other communities from the rural areas.The institute works for the eradication of poverty in the society.The college takes measures to fulfill the following objectives.

To  train the students to implement new trends in engineering and technology in the daily       life of the people.
To develop personality and self confidence in the students.
To give duo preference to the weaker  section of the society irrespective of the caste ,creed  and religion.

          St.Xavier 's  polytechnic college was established in the year 1985  by punitha  valanar meenavar kalvi Arakkattalai with the aim to promote technical  education in   rural areas .This is the first self finance co-educational polytechnic college in Tuticorin District.This institution was established with the help and contribution of the Catholic  Paravan and Mukkuvar fishermen community.

Initially the college was started with three Diploma Courses.
Civil Engineering
Mechanical Engineering
Electronics and Communication Engineering

To Promote ample opportunitues in the field of Engineering,the following Branches were started.

Computer Engineering in the year 1994
Electrical and Electronics Engineering in the year 2005
Computer Networking Engineering in the year 2009
Automobile Engineering in the year 2012

Students can also play infoor games like carrom, chess,etc.
The College Runs Don Bosco Hostel to accommodate students from distance places.
Buses are plied even from remote places to enable students and staff to reach the college safe and on time.
